Traverse's guide to promoting your website |
| The obvious: a) Select a domain name that represents what you do for you
business. It would be helpful to pick at least one keyword to include in the domain name.
b) Upload your files and be certain that your
website is functioning correctly. Identify at least 4 key pages that you might desire to
have visitors locate on the search engines to enter your website.
c) Download the Traverse Promotion Spider
and read the help file to learn how the layout of your page affects your ranking. This
help file will also teach you how to correctly write <meta tags> to enhance your
search engine ranking. (Free Download- Windows Shareware)
d) Download the Traverse Web Position
Analyzer and read the help file to learn about what makes one page rank higher than
another for a given combination of keywords. Learn additional free tips and tricks to gain
your page a better rank. (Free Download- Windows Shareware) |
| Step one: the
focus a) Consider what keywords
your visitors might type in to the search engines to find a website like yours. Write down
at least 10 keywords or combinations of keywords. Rank them in order of importance.
b) Write a description for each page you selected
to use for the search engines. Keep it short and weight the description with keywords. If
you have more than 1 subject category, be sure to weight at least one page for each
subject to maximize your chances of scoring well in that keyword topic.
c) Write a title for each page your selected to
use for the search engines. Keep it very short and place important keywords in the title.
Don't be over repetitive. |
| step two: the
competition a) Run the Traverse Web Position Analyzer
for the combinations of keywords you want to rank well on the search engines and see who
is at the top. View the html source code (an option with your web browser) and read the
hidden meta tags for the top scoring pages. Give careful thought to what made them rank so
high. Consider adopting some of their techniques to your web pages. |
| step three: fine
tuning a) Look at your four pages
(or more) and make sure you aren't over repetitive with your meta tags. It's best
not to mention the same keyword more than three times on the same meta line. If two of the
pages are too similar then modify them. The broader your keyword focus appeal, the more
traffic you will receive.
b) Make sure the first sentence of the first
paragraph is weighted with keywords and also is appealing. Many search engines use this
sentence to form a description. Also make sure the last text on your page is keyword
weighted as well.
c) Use <alt> tags on your images. Some
search engines will index these as well. |
| step four:
promotion a) Run the Traverse Promotion Spider
and enter in all of your web page information. Double check everything. We recommend
cutting and pasting directly off the html on your source code page. You need to use an
autosubmission program like this because many search engines now rank based upon your link
popularity. If the search engines find you on over 1000 links pages, search engines, and
directories, they will think you are more popular than someone who isn't found. The guys
at the top do this, you must as well.
b) After submitting each page individually, it
will take many weeks to see results. Altavista and Infoseek index every few days, the rest
take 3-6 weeks to index you. The 'link farms' will send you masses of email, just delete
them as fast as they come in unless you enjoy getting sales pitches.
c) Yahoo: Submit Yahoo by hand. It is very
important you are prepared for this submission. Only a select % get approved for Yahoo and
all sites are reviewed individually.
|
| step five:
retention a) Run the Web Position Analyzer
every 2-3 weeks and see if you have moved up or down in the rankings (or if you are in the
top 30 at all). If you fell, figure out why. Read their source codes and try to move up
the ladder.
b) Resubmit your website anytime you make
significant changes or modify your keywords. Because the search engines are so different,
don't expect to score well on multiple. If you get just one top 20 ranking, you will see a
greatly increased traffic flow. If a single page ever gets in the top, best to never
resubmit that page to that search engine ever again lest you might get reindexed and lose
ground. If it isn't broke... |
| Step Six:
Improving with time a) Whenever you
get the chance, create doorway pages as new gateways for people to find your site. As time
permits, create pages with highly focused keywords to try to score well on a narrow set of
keywords or on a specific search engine.
b) Study the special information pages you are
given access to when you purchase either the Position Tracking
software or Promotion
software. They are updated and give you very specific information on each individual
search engine. Also sign up for the free monthly newsletter to stay on top of current
developments. |
